John D. Merritt, father of Mrs. Blanche Merritt Jackson of Clayton, passed away at his home in Plainfield Saturday night, October 27. Mr. Merritt had been in failing health for some time, yet his sudden death was a shock to the community. He stayed with his daughter some and in his own home a part of the time, Mrs. Merritt having died several years ago. The body was taken to the home of Mrs. Jackson in Clayton Sunday morning. Mr. Merritt was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Merritt and was born near Avon, November 30, 1871, being 62 years and 11 months old. He was married to Elizabeth Eulis in 1874 and they were the parents of three children, two of whom had passed on. He attended the Abner's Creek Baptist church. He was of a quite and unassuming disposition, however he was well-know and held in high esteem in Plainfield and surrounding communities where he had always lived. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Paul Jackson, of Clayton; four grandchildren, two half-brothers, Oliver Merritt of Danville, Oren Merritt of near Danville, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Nora Ragan of Danville, and Mrs. Oscar Eggers of Coatesville. Funeral services were conducted for him Tuesday morning at the Baptist church in Plainfield by Rev. Dallas Renn. Burial at Maple Hill Cemetery.
