John F. Lewis, Sr 2/4/1830 - 12/29/1879

Enlisted in Spalding County GA for the C.S.A. on 9/25/1861 as a Private in Company C - 30th Regiment GA Infantry. The unit served in Charleston but was reorganized in May 1862 and changed to Company F and in Sept 1863 was consolidated with the 29th Regiment. The unit took an active part in the operations of the Army of TN. From Chickamauga, GA to Atlanta, GA and then moved with General Hood on into TN.

He was wounded 9/19/1863 in the Battle of Chickamauga, captured 12/16/1864 in Nashville, TN & sent to Camp Douglas, ILL, was released 6/9/1865 (war was already over)

He was the son of John Benjamin Lewis (born 1807) & Thurza Herrington Lewis who were married in 1828.

He was married to Lavinia Ruth Butts Lewis.
He had several businesses, one of which was John F Lewis & Sons (sons Elijah & William "Minor" both worked there). In Oct of 1869 established a mercantile & banking business. He put his son Elijah Banks Lewis (17 at the time) in charge as partner & manager.

He had several children (Elijah, Eva, Robert, Sherebiah (namesake of Capt Sherebiah Butts of Revolutionary War), John Jr, Martha, Pearl, & William "Minor"). Four are in the Felton Cemetery: Elijah Banks Lewis & William "Minor" Lewis which have their own family plots & 2 infant sons in the same family plot as he & his wife. He & Lavinia had 8 children in total.
