Joel Wood was the son of Isaac Wood, who was born Dec 26 1729 in Lancashire, England and died Apr 21 1803 in Pendleton County, (West) Virginia and Rachel Ramey Wood, who was born Mar 1 1744 in Lorraine, France. Rachel died Aug 29 1822 in Fayette County, Ohio.

Joel moved his family to Ohio in 1811. He served as Coroner and Justice of the Peace in Fayette County. Joel also served as a county supervisor and State Representative when he resided in Mercer County, Ohio.

History of Fayette co., Ohio:
Joel Wood and Elizabeth Miller were married in Pendleton co., Virginia in 1797. In 1811 Joel and Elizabeth settled on a tract of land lying in Paint and Jefferson twp. with Paint Creek running throught the center. Joel was one of the county's first justices of the peace. As early as 1821 religious services were held in the home of Joel Wood on Paint Creek,with Chandler Tuttle a licensed minister conducting the services. In 1822 a group of persons meeting at the house of Joel Wood adopted the name of "The Regular Baptist Church of Christ."
Joel Wood was married 4 times. His first wife Elizabeth Miller died in 1813. He then married Sarah Price in 1814 and Sarah died in 1823. Joel then married Jane Armstrong in 1824, she died following childbirth in 1825. Joel and Hannah Lillie were married in 1826 but had no children. Joel died August 7, 1834, and is buried in the Hidy Cemetery in Fayette co., Ohio. Other children of Joel Wood were: Solomon, Sarah, Amos, Ely, Rachel, Phebe, Elizabeth, Joel, Anna Barbara, Susannah, Patesy, Amariah, Jane.
