He then enlisted in Newville August 8, 1861, and mustered in Washington DC August 17 with Co. H, 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry, at the rank of private. Wounded at Warrenton, Virginia, January 7, 1864, costing him a leg. He was discharged by surgeon's certificate on June 13, 1864.
