MRS. JOHN McMILLAN, PROMINENT CARTHAGE WOMAN DIES TODAY

Mrs. John A. McMillan, 89, a member of an early day prominent Carthage family died at 12:50 o'clock this afternoon in McCune-Brooks hospital where she had been a patient since last February 8 when she suffered a fractured hip in a fall at the family home, 1400 South Maple Street.
Mrs. McMillan had been in failing health for some time prior to the fall.

Her son, William McMillan, Rochester, N.Y. was here for some time after his mother was stricken and later Mrs. William McMillan came to Carthage. She left about a week ago to return to her home.

Mrs. McMillan reached her 89th birthday last November 15. She was a daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. L. I. Mathews. Her father was a prominent early day Carthage physician. The daughter, Lucille Mathews, was graduated from DePauw university in Greencastle, Indiana.

MARRIED IN 1895

She and John A. McMillan were married October 24, 1895, at the home of her parents, 1139 South Maple street.
Mr. McMillan, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania came to Carthage at an early age.

Following his marriage he was in the shoe business with the late L. S. Durham and later in the insurnace business until his retirement in 1946.

Mr. McMillan served as county collector here from 1920 to 1924 and was a member of the Carthage school board at the time the Mark Twain and Eugene Field schools were built. He also is an honorary member of the Carthage Rotary club. He also served on the city council in the late 1890's.

Mr. McMillan enlisted in the Carthage Light Guard -- the Carthage National Guard unit in 1887. He became a lieutenant in 1892 and captain in 1896.

In 1898 he led the Carthage Light Guard, Company A. Second Missouri Volunteer Infantry, off to the Spanish-American war. One chill and rainy night at Lexington, Ky., while officer of the day, Captain McMillan caught cold in his eyes. The camp surgeons could never restore his eyes to normal, nor could the specialists in later years. Thus, by degrees his vision failed, resulting in total blindness more than 20 years ago.

LONG ACTIVE

After Mr. McMillan lost his sight, Mrs. McMillan devoted much of her time to his welfare, accompanying him on business errands and reading to him.

Mr. McMillan was 91 last January.

Mrs. McMillan was a member of the First United Presbyterian church. She was a charter member of the Carthage branch, American Association of University Women and several other social organizations, including the Junior Shakespeare society, prior to the time her health failed.

Surviving her in addition to Mr. McMillan and the son are three grandchildren, Mrs. Clinton O. Steadman, Mrs. George Muir Hair and William McMillian, Jr., all of whom live in the east, and two great grandchildren. A bother, Frank Mathews lives in Joplin.
