Mrs.C.M.Imboden,80,died early Sunday morning in Decatur and Macon county hospital of complications resulting from a broken hip received a week ago. She fell on Aug 22 at the home of her son,Charles A. Imboden. The family had just had a birthday dinner in the cafe of the Nelson park pavilion in celebration of Ben.A.Imbodens anniversary. Tired from the excitement and her unusual activities of the day she fell on the sidewalk as she was walking to her sons door form the car. She was taken to Decatur and Macon county hospital where she seemed to be getting along satisfactorily for a day or two. Last Tuesday her condition became worse and gradually grew more serious until her death.
Mrs. Imboden had lived in Decatur since she was 10 years of age and was one of the best know of the citys residents. She was born on Feb. 2,1851 in Spencer, Ind. the daughter of Dr.and Mrs.B.Allison. She was married Aug 9 1870 to Cyrus Mark Imboden who preceded her in death on Sept.21,1922.
Mrs.Imboden had just recovered from typhoid fever when she came to Decatur with her parents as a child and one of her first friends was a little neighbor girl now Mrs. J.F.Roach.She was graduated in the second class in Decatur High school. Until her death she and Theodore Coleman were the only surviving member of that class.
She was brought up in a home filled with Methodist traditions and she retained her church membership until her death. Bishop Asbury the first Methodist bishop American used to visit her fathers home when he was a boy and Peter Cartright circuit riding pioneer visited her girl home and stories about him were among the favorites in her great store.
Totally deaf for many years, Mrs. Imboden had been largely cut off from conversation with her friends but many of them particularly young teachers associated with her daughter in the Decatur school system loved to visit her. She was an expert lip reader and a great reader of books of travel. Just before her accident she again had read her husbands Civil war diary and traced his marches in her atlas. In spite of her fraility she took an active interest in gardens and maintained a small rock garden in the rear of her apartment.
She first lived in a small house in the 300 block W.Main street, but resided for many years in a big brick house in W. North street, torn down a number of years ago to enlarge. the playground of E.A.Gastman school. This old house call popularly Solomons Temple" because a man named Solomon built it had a porch immediately adjoining the sidewalk and a long gallery on the west side in the eastern fashion. More recently she and her daughter,Miss Sarah Mark Imboden had been making their home in an apartment in W.Macon street.
Mrs. Imboden often had said that her three ambitions were to live to be 80 years of age, to have a great grandchild and never to outlive her usefulness and activity. All three were granted to her. For many years she was a member of First Methodist church but about 30 years ago transferred her membership to the Church in Pittsburgh,Pa.
Although active Mrs.Imboden had been in frail health since she was 73. At that time she fell downstairs in her home and was ill for many weeks. On her 75th birthday she underwent an emergency operation for mastoiditis and a few years ago she was ill of crysipelas. She seldom mentioned her illness.
She leaves the following children,Miss Sarah Mark Imboden, Charles A.and Ben A.Imboden, all o fDecatur Mrs. Ira Fleming, the former Daisy Imboden of Crosby, Tex. and Mrs. Ralph Tenney, formerly Suzanne Imboden who has lived in Rockford for the last years. There are seven grandchildren and one greatgrandson,John Robert son of Charles Fleming of Decatur. A granddaughter, Mrs. Helen Fleming lived with her for the last three years.
The body was removed to Dawson & Wikoff funeral home. Funeral services will be conduced at 4 oclock Tuesday afternoon in the chapel. Dr.W.F.Davidson, president of Illinois Wesleyan and former pastor of First Methodist church here will be in charge and assisted by Rev.A..R.Grummon.
