TWO BOYS DROWN, ONE RESCUED FROM ROADSIDE POOL AT SOMERSET

Somerset O. Jan 21-Robert Clouse five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Clouse and Earl Emmert, 6, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Emmert were drowned Tuesday afternoon when ice on a pool near their home here broke, dropping them in eight feet of water.

Earl Middaugh, Somerset auto mechanic, saved a third boy, Don Emmert, three year old brother of Earl by wading into the water and pulling him from beneath the ice.

A fourth boy, four year old Wilbur Emmert, brother of Don and Earl, was playing on the bank and summoned Middaugh, who lived nearby, when the accident occured. None of the boys attended school.

In rescuing Don Emmert, Middaugh was assisted by Fred Clouse, fifteen year old brother of Robert.

After being pulled from the pool, the boys were taken to their home for the administration of artificial respiration but only Don Emmert responded to treatment. The Clouse boy's body was not recovered until the Somerset Fire Department pumped half the water from the pool about an hour after the accident. The department continued operations to ascertain if any other bodies were in the water.

The pool is located US 22 in the west corporation line of Somerset. It was formed as flood waters rushing through a culvert which tunneled under the highway.

The pool was approximately ten feet in diameter, but its depth was estimated at eight feet.

Robert Clouse is survived by his parents, two brothers James and Fred, and a sister, Bernice. In addition to his parents, Earl Emmert is survived by three brothers, Don,
Wilbur and James.
