Orval Fred Baum, son of Floyd and Bertha Mumm Baum, was born March 20, 1916, in Harrison County, Iowa. He attended public schools there before moving to Sac County in 1936, where he was employed in farming.

Orval entered the military in August 1942, serving in the European Theater of Operations during World War Two until his discharge in November 1945. On December 7, 1945, he was married to Linda Ehlers at Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church of Lytton, Iowa.

Orval and Linda farmed southwest of Lytton until 1983, when they moved to Sac City. They are parents of three children: Rita, Diane, and Dean. Orval was a member of Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church of Lytton, where he had been baptized and confirmed.

Orval struggled with illnesses the past twenty years, including heart disease and cancer. He spent the last six months in Minneapolis being cared for by his wife.

Orval Baum died Friday, December 13, 1991, at North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis during a brief stay in the hospice unit.

Orval is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Gaylord Thormodsgard of Plymouth, Minnesota; son and daughter-in-law Dean and Paula Baum of Wassau, Wisconsin; son-in-law Stan Ragnes of Plymouth, Minnesota; five grandchildren: Tim and Amy Thormodsgard, Joshua Ragnes, and Ryan and Bradley Baum; one sister: Bernice Hillmer of Lytton; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Roy and Hazel Baum of San Diego, California, and Francis and Phyllis Baum of Fairfield, Iowa; sister-in-law Louis Baum of San Jose, California; close family friend, Pat Holman, of Aurora, Colorado; and by other relatives and friends.

Orval was preceded in death by his daughter, Rita Ragnes, in July of this year; his brother, Alvin; his sister, La Vonne; and by his parents.

Interment will be at Cedar Cemetery, rural Lytton.

The family invites everyone back to the church following interment for lunch and fellowship.
