Born in Welgesheim, Germany, he and his family immigrated to America, landing in Galveston, Texas. He had been given a land contract for 320 acres in the Colony of Fisher-Miller; however, he apparently never made it any farther than Galveston.

He fought in the Civil War, serving in Company E, 1st Texas Heavy Artillery. He was awarded 1280 acres of land in Galveston County in August 8, 1881 under the April 1881 act granting land certificates to disabled Confederate Veterans.
