BURLINGTON - Merton L. "Butch" Bessette, 57, died peacefully at home with his family in Burlington on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 after a courageous struggle with a rare form of cancer.

He was born in Albany, New York on Feb. 25, 1952, son of Lawrence and Arlene (Hance) Bessette. He worked for E.B. and A.C. Whiting Company/Specialty Filaments for many years and most recently for C.C.T.A. He was an avid NASCAR fan. Other interests of Butch's were hunting with his son and best friend, Bob LaRock, and he also enjoyed fishing as well. During Butch's courageous fight with cancer he was able to fulfill his dream with his son, going to Bristol, Tennessee for a NASCAR race.

Merton is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary (Myers); his two children, Merton Bessette Jr. and his wife, Annette of Winooski and Ann Bessette of Burlington; his mother, Arlene Ploof of Bristol; his sisters and brother and their spouses, Sheila and Don Swiderski of Saratoga, N.Y., Brenda and Kenneth Barfield of Missouri, Paula and Coleman Coyne of Burlington, and Kenneth and Theresa Bessette of Huntington; his sister-in-law, Gloria Raymond of Burlington; his granddaughter, Saige "Teacup" Bessette, and grandson, Aidan Miller whom Butch and Mary raised since he was an infant and Aidan's brother, Anthony Miller; his special nephews and nieces, Nick and Kyle, Laura, Terry and Mike; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Butch is also survived by his stepmother, Connie Bessette; his half brothers, Randy, Kevin, and David Bessette, and his half sister, Lisa Martin, all of Burlington.

He was predeceased by his father; his brother, William Bedgood Jr.; his half brother, Lawrence Bessette Jr. and his brother-in-law, John Beaupre. The family would like to thank CCTA and Macy's, especially Bob, Halsey, Mike, Doris, and Bob and Ruth for all of their help during Merton's illness.

Interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery Annex, Pomeroy Sreet., Burlington.
