OBITUARY
Orlando Whitney, son of Jonah and Mary Whitney was born June 8th, 1836, and died Nov. 27, 1917, being 81 years 5 months and 19 days old.
He was married to Sophia Curtis Sept. 11th, 1862, by A. H. Rice. This union was blessed with six children, George, of Los Angeles, Calif; Nellie, wife of E. L. Smith, died March 13, 1902; Kate, wife of T. H. Hubble near Alsey. Albert of near Barrow and Frank of near White Hall, and Harry Lee, died in infancy. His wife died May 31st, 1886. He was married again to Mary Winans, Oct. 1888. She survives.
He professed faith in Christ and united with the M. E. Church and later was baptized into the Christian Church at Manchester and remained a faithful Christian to the end. Two years ago he made a visit back home. He told his children everything is alright, "I am ready to go anytime."
He was born and raised on the farm, and attended the country schools and later went to School at Jacksonville and worked after school hours to pay for his music lessons and received his diploma as a graduate in music.
He was always very ambitious.
Many times his family have heard him repeating his Sunday School lesson as he was coming from his labors in the field.
Since leaving the old home some 18 years ago he has endured many hardships. He leaves his children, 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and many old friends.
The funeral was conducted by Elder Francis Fowler at the Baptist church in Manchester, Sunday afternoon at one o'clock, largely attended by old neighbors and friends. The pall bearers were: Joe Curtis, Howard Whitney, Elmer, Frank, Russell and Austin Whitney. Interment was at the Bower Cemetery.
Card of Thanks
The undersigned children of the late Orlando Whitney wish to express their grateful appreciation for the many expressions of sympathy and assistance given them in their recent bereavement and especially to the people of Manchester Baptist Church for the use of their church edifice for funeral services, and all who assisted at the service.
