James Bown was a designer and manufacturer of firearms. He first partnered with John Tetley, as Bown & Tetley, later splitting off to begin Enterprise Gun Works. He retired, but came out of retirement to partner with his son, William H. Bown, as Bown & Son. He developed a long rifle which was very popular in the Civil War. His work is collectible today.

James married Maria Bailey about 1844 in Pittsburgh.
His name as found in many records is always James Bown, no middle initial or name. Only once did I see James Edward Bown, which appeared on the death certificate for his daughter, Alice Victoria Boal. This name was given by her niece, Mrs. A. W. Mc Cormick, who I believe was Clara Jane Bown Kirkland's daughter. Clara's death certificate just says James.

I have heard that they had nine children, I can only account for six, andI will list the names that I have – it might help with research. If there were more children, they were probably born between 1850 and 1957.

William Henry was born Nov 1847 (census) married Rebecca Steen in 1867. He died 25 Jul 1903 per obituary, and is buried in this cemetery, Section 15, Lot 17

Anna M. "Annie" was born 19 Dec 1849 and married Joseph A. Steen brother of Rebecca above, in 1867. Annie died 4 Sep 1922.

Clara Jane born 16 Apr 1858 married William M. Kirkland 26 Sep 1895. She died 25 Nov 1935 and is buried in Section 26, Lot 3

Edwin Florence (correspondence. Correspondence states Florence married Hattie, and he has two very young children buried here which I did not find other records). Florence or Edwin F. was born 19 Feb 1859 and died 29 Sep 1939. He married Sadie E. Santon of New Orleans about 1894.

Alice Victoria born 6 May 1861 (twin) married first Jesse Miller McGeary onn 14 Apr 1887. They seem to have divorced, she is living again as Alice V. Bown by 1893, with her brother James W. Bown and seeming to work for her father. She married second William Henry Boal on 22 Apr 1895. She died 22 Jul 1936 and is buried in Section 26, Lot 3

James Winfield born 6 May 1861 (twin). James married Mary A. Rheam on 1 Oct 1895. He died 6 Mar 1955 and is buried here, Section: TEMPLE OF MEMORIES Lot: 121B Grave: 0 with his wife and daughter Helen B. Bown, schoolteacher.
