From the North Branch Review (Friday, October 8, 1897) -
Will Ericson was called to his home in Spring Lake last week by the serious illness of his father, Charles Ericson. He will remain until a change takes place. There is not much hope of his father's recovery, as last accounts were that it was only a matter of a little time until death would relieve the old pioneer's sufferings.
---------------------------------------------
Carl and two of his brothers (Jacob and John) served in the Civil War. These three brothers were living in Franconia when the 1865 census was taken (this contradicts the newspaper article below).

From the North Branch Review (September 25, 1891) -
"Charles Erickson, the old veteran and old timer of Spring Lake, was in Branch last Monday to dispose of some potatoes and talk over old times with his friend Lem. Mr. Erickson squatted in the vicinity in 1854 and has seen some lively times since that date. He followed the Sioux to the Missouri River and carried a musket three years in the South."
