Crash Is Fatal To J. E. Madison, Funeral Friday

J. Emery Madison, 78, of 805 Woodward Ave., Orland, suffered fatal injuries and his wife, Letta, was severely injured in a Trinity County automobile accident on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Madison were on their way to Fortuna to visit their son, Emery. They were about 18 miles west of Weaverville on highway 299 when the left front tire of their sedan blew out.
The car swerved to the left lane, then turned sideways and skidded backwards as Madison tried to regain control. The vehicle went off the right edge of the highway and fell about 15 feet, turning over in its descent.
The doors opened and both Mr. and Mrs. Madison were thrown out. He suffered 14 broken ribs and other injuries, and Mrs. Madison received three broken ribs, a broken finger and severe bruises.
They were taken to Trinity County Hospital for treatment. The accident occurred about 2 p.m. and he appeared to be doing well until about 9 p.m., when he began sinking. Death came at 9:58. Mrs. Madison has been transferred to Corning Memorial Hospital and is reported recovering satisfactorily.
Mr. Madison was born in Nebraska Feb. 20, 1885. He served in the Navy from 1908 to 1912 and was a retired machinist and farmer. The Madisons came to Orland in 1957.
Besides his wife, Letta, and son, Emery, he is survived by three daughters, Ethna Deming, Idaho; Atha Wimmer, Virginia, and Dorothy Bass, Minnesota; a brother Bird, of Olivehurst, and a sister, Florence Sands, Missouri.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Sweet Chapel here, with Elder T. Fisher of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Willows officiating. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery. - Transcribed by E.
