Dr. Virgil Jay Wise

SUN CITY, Ariz. — Dr. Virgil Jay Wise, 92, died at 11:43 Tuesday at Hospice of Wendy Valley in Sun City. Born May 7, 1917, in Daviess County, he was the son of Adrian J. and Ethel Mae (McCracken) Wise.

A 1934 graduate of Washington High School, he earned his bachelor's degree at Indiana State University, his master's degree at Butler University, and his Ph.D. at Indiana University. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of United Community Church of Christ. Dr. Wise had two careers. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1965. He entered Abbott Hall, Northwestern University, as a midshipman and retired at the rank of commander. As an educator, he began his career as a social studies teacher and was promoted to principal. He retired as professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine (Denolf) Wise, whom he married May 5, 1977; one daughter, Dr. Jeanie Renee Brink of Altadena, Calif.; one son, Virgil Jay Wise II of Scottsdale, Ariz.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jewel Overholser; and a brother, Wilbur Wise.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Gill Chapel, with Bro. Michael Frances officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery, with full military graveside honors conducted by the American Legion and V.F.W.
