Mildred C. Nelson, 101, passed away peacefully with family at her side Nov. 11, 2009.
She was born Sept. 15, 1908, to Francis and Sophia Aspelin of Dwight.
After attending Bethany College and graduating from Kansas State University in 1933, she married F. Wallace Nelson on August 4, 1936. They raised their family on the Nelson homestead near Bridgeport, KS and retired and moved to Lindsborg in 1971. Mildred joined family in Overland Park in 2006.
She enjoyed teaching school in Morris County, worked as a Nurse Aide at Bethany Home and shared her talents as a 4-H clothing project leader for 14 years.
Other involvement in the community include PRIDE, Lindsborg Garden Club, Svensk Hyllningsfest, Meals-on-Wheels, Galaxy Club, Lioness Club and the Victory EHU. In 1983 Mildred was honored as Queen of the Lindsborg Svensk Hyllningsfest.
As an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church she served as Rural League president, Released-Time teacher, president of Lutheran Church Women, Naomi Circle member and author/director of the Centennial Pageant and multiple other programs.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Fern Cole, and brother, Leslie Aspelin.
She is survived by her children, Larry and wife, Karen of Overland Park, Verlie Train and husband, Tom of Olathe, and Merle and wife, Teri of Lindsborg. Survivors also include her twin sister, Millicent McLeavy of Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington St., in Lindsborg. A memorial service celebrating her life will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church, 320 N. Main, also in Lindsborg.
Internment will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Lindsborg, immediately following the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg.
