Roland took great interest in the restoration of San Antonio's Old Spanish Missions. "Every time he saw something about them that was deteriorating, it would just hurt him," said his wife Marjorie Bueche. He felt like the missions needed all the help and support they could get. He became interested when a friend was serving as pastor at one of the mission churches. In 1973 he was involved in the organization of the Mission Art Group, an association of artists who raise money to benefit the Old Spanish Missions.
He found an interest in painting many years ago, and had no formal lessons, but learned by watching and reading. He favored oil painting in sepia tones, and also did some wood work. Roland loved being out-of-doors, and enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.
A San Antonio resident all his life, Bueche graduated from Central Catholic High School and attended the University of Texas at Austin. He married Marjorie Gruen on August 3, 1940 in San Antonio, Texas. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He worked in the grocery business all his life, and retired as a salesman from Gulf Food Brokerage in 1978.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Bueche; three daughters, Beverly Bueche Pollock, Sharon Bueche Hoessly and Linda Bueche James , all of San Antonio; three grandsons; his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Adolph Bueche of San Antonio; one sister, Gerry Bueche Moy of San Antonio; two half-sisters, Marilyn Bueche Drever of Greenburg, Pennsysvania, and Patricia Bueche Wiehardt of Texarkana; one brother, Anton Bueche of San Antonio, and two half-brothers, Frederick Bueche of San Antonio and Don Bueche of Dallas.
