John Samuel Acord was born 1 December 1856 in Friley, Johnson, Arkansas. John was orphaned during the Civil War. His father died with a diesease while in the service of the Union Army and his mother died within a few months before in Friley, Johnson Co, Arkansas. Their Aunt Angeline
took John and his brother to the home of the Uncle Calvin Acord. Their grandfather Spencer Homer, came and took the boys to his home near the current town of Ozone, Johnson Co, Ark. Almost as soon as they arrived at their grandfather's home, bushwhackers killed Spencer. Their Uncle John T. Horner then moved the family to Missouri. John assumed guardianship of the orphans and filed for a Federal Pension on their behalf on 7th September 1865. It is not clear if he was ever legally named their gaurdian. After the war was over some of the Horner family returned to Arkansas, bringing John and his brother with them. John't grandfather, John Acord, died in 1866 and when his estate was settled in 1867 John's Uncle Calvin was named guardian of the boys. He was raised in his Uncle Calvin's home. He married Amanda C. Hill in 1874 in Johnson Co, Arkansas. Daughter of Joseph Hill and Emeline Jones. She was born 5 August 1859 in Yale, Johnson, Co, Arkansas and died 26 April 1937 in Yale, Johnson Co, Arkansas. John was a farmer. In June 1900, his cousin Mary Newton Acord, daughter of Thomas Newton B. Acord and Martha Loretta Kozier, lived with them in Johnson Co. After John passed away Amanda moved to Dyer, Crawford Co, Arkansas where she lived with her son Robert. John and amanda are buried in Kendall Cemetery in Johnson Co, Arkansas.
