John J. Vanderburg, from Troy, New York emigrated to Mississippi around 1830 where he met Matilda Caroline Ratcliff. They were married in Yazoo County where the bride was born. Their first child Rufus King, was born 1832 in Benton, followed by Mary Ann "Mollie" in 1836 born in Vicksburg. Mollie later had another sibling, John Quitman who was born in 1846. After the Civil War, Mollie met and married Thomas G. Scott December 13, 1865, in Tyler County, Texas. By 1870, the next records found for the family of Mollie and Thomas with four children: Ada M. and Oda A.(twins born 1867), Marion R.(born 1868)and Thomas Mark (born 1869) were in Woodville, Tyler County, Texas. At that time, Matilda Ratcliff Vanderburg and her youngest son John Q. were living in the home with Mollie and her family. Several members of the Ratcliff family had come from Mississippi to the Tyler County area and lived near. It is assumed that Mollie's father had died, although no records have been found. By 1873 Mollie's husband Thomas G had died. He was buried in the Town Bluff Cemetery, near Woodville, Texas.

Mollie married Richard C. Harper, March 1879, Tyler County, Texas. By the time the 1880 census was taken, there was a newborn girl in the home named Amy Harper, but Mollie Harper was listed as head of household, and there was no husband there. When Mollie died in 1941, she had been living in the home of her youngest son and his wife in Austin, Texas. She was buried in Austin Memorial Cemetery next to her son Thomas M Scott who died 1956.
