RITES ARE PLANNED FOR VICTIM OF WAR
Last rites for Lowell Barker, who was attached to the 2nd Battalion of the 1st Marine Regiment when he was killed on Tarawa November 20, 1943, will be conducted Tuesday at 2 PM in the Franklin, Sovern & Downs Funeral Home in Modesto.
A native of Texas, Barker was 28 at the time of his death. He attended schools in Texas and came to Fresno 10 years before entering the marine corps November 19, 1942. He was employed as a truck driver by a local transportation company.
He entered the service with a brother, Ernest Barker, and underwent basic training in San Diego. The brothers went overseas at the same time. Ernest was in the same battle on Tarawa in which Lowell was killed, but he did not learn of his brother's death until three days later.
Other surviving relatives include the widow, Mrs. Ruby Barker of Fresno; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Barker of Modesto; two other brothers, Albert Barker of Modesto and Eddie C. Barker of Idaho; and three sisters, Mrs. Mart Butler of Hanford and Mrs. O. D. Claxton and Mrs. Donald Armstrong, both of Modesto. Ernest Barker is a civilian employee on Saipan.
The funeral services will be followed by military graveside rites in a Modesto Cemetery.
