Edith Sanders BURT was born 16 Aug 1867 in Fort Sanders, Albany, Wyoming, the daughter of Capt. Andrew Sheridan BURT (1839-1915) and Elizabeth Johnston REYNOLDS (1839-1926). Edith was the first child born at Fort Sanders, and was a source of wonderment for many who came to see her. For a time, she was known on the post as the "Stockade Baby." (more details pending...)
Edith was from a thoroughly military family, with both her father, Andrew Sheridan BURT, and her brother Reynolds Johnston BURT, eventually retiring as brigadier generals, and both are buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
In about 1891, while living at Rock Springs Barracks, Rock Springs, Sweetwater, WY, where her father was commanding officer, Edith Sanders BURT married Lt. Harry George TROUT (1861-1905), who was assigned as a Lieutenant to "E" Troop of the 9th Cavalry. Presumably, Harry and Edith had known each other from previous military posts. At least one child was born to this union, Elizabeth Dorothy TROUT, born 2 Jun 1892 at Fort Robinson, Dawes, Nebraska. "Dorothy" went on to become an accomplished painter and is listed in the "Who's Who of American Artists."
