Richard J. Holt was the son of Squire (sometimes written Esquire) Holt and Rebecca J. "Becky" Johnston. His headstone gives his birth year as 1825, however his age is given as 21 in 1850, 30 in 1860, 39 in 1870, 55 in 1880 and as 74 in 1900, at which time his birth was given as "August 1824". As is often the case, the birth year on later records is only as good as the memory of the person giving the information at the time. I have used the date given on the stone here.

Richard married twice: Martha A. Brown on 21 Apr 1856 in Wake, NC. She had two children, Rebecca and James. She ca. 1882/1883. So far, no headstone has been found for her. She is listed in her father, 'Burwell Brown's will in 1870 with her two sisters. She had no living children at that time. This is backed up by the 1880 census:
Richard J. Holt 55, Martha Holt 70
Edward Olive 6, adopted son.

Richard married Lousia Luvenia "Vennie" Moore ca. 1884 and had one daughter by her; Sarah Rebecca "Sally" in 1885. (It was Vennie's second marriage. 1she brought a daughter from her first marriage into the union: Lucy Ann Johnson born 1877.)
