COLUMBIA -- James C. Garrett, age 89, passed away March 6, 2007 at his home.

He was born Nov. 3, 1917 in Spur, Texas, one of nine children of Homer Harmon and Maggie McDaniel Garrett. Married Helen Lucille Cunningham in Moab, on September 21, 1940. She died Sept. 12, 1973. Married Mattie Ezell Hicks, Dec. 16, 1973 in Lake Tahoe, Nev.

Jay was a member of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Honorably served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II.

Jay and Mattie lived in California for 45 years, where he built their home in Grass Valley, after he retired from the Teamsters. In September of 2006, Jay and Mattie moved to Columbia to be closer to family and for health reasons.

Jay will be deeply missed by family. He was loved by all who knew him.

Survived by loving wife of 33 years, 3 children, 4 step-children, brother, and 2 sisters. Preceded in death by parents; and three sons, Mike, Ron and Tim Garrett.

Graveside service Monday, March 12 10 a.m. at Valley View Cemetery in Sunnyside. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral HOme Sunday evening 5 - 7 p.m.
