1. Obituary: Julius U. Piper for 11 years supervisor of the Third Ward, died suddenly at noon today at his home, 211 West Eighth Street. Wednesday he was apparently in his usual good health and started downtown but was forced to return home after going only two blocks. He was taken to his bed in the afternoon and had been failing rapidly until his death today. Death was due to heart disease and hardening of the arteries.

Mr. Piper was 68 years old and had lived in Flint on West Eighth Street for the last 25 years. He was always prominent in Republican politics, having been elected to the office of supervisor of the Third Ward 11 times. He was a member of Flint Lodge, No 23, F.& A.M., and was a regular attendant at the Court Street M.E. Church.

He was born in New York state February 21, 1847, and came to Michigan with his parents in 1854. He enlisted in the Civil War when he was 17 years old in Company H, Twenty-Third Michigan Infantry and remained until the close of the war. He was married to Lorada E. Penn, September 22, 1869, and lived on a farm near Corunna. He later moved to a farm south of Flint and moved to Flint 25 years ago.

Besides his wife, he leaves one son, Mark Piper and one daughter, Ida Piper. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. S.J. Thompson of Lansing.
Taken from The Flint Journal, May 14, 1915.
