B. Patrick 'Pat' Abbott, 72, of 4255 Waymar, retired Memphis Country Club golf professional and leader in Theatre Memphis, died yesterday at William F. Bowld Hospital after a long illness. The Pasadena, Calif., native served as professional at the country club for 34 years before retiring in 1981, becoming professional emeritus. Mr. Abbott had long been active in Theatre Memphis. He and his wife, Charlotte, acted in various productions and served on the board of directors. He also served as chairman of the building committee that oversaw construction of the new building at 630 Perkins Extended. Mr. Abbott was a three-time winner of the Tennessee Golf Association Open, a tournament he won the first time it was held in 1949. He also won it in 1954 and 1955. He was champion of the U.S. Golf Association's Public Links competition in 1936 and was runner-up in the USGA's Amateur tournament in 1938 and 1941. He was a communicant at St. Michael's Catholic Church. In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Claudia Stockwell of Memphis; a son, B. Patrick Abbott Jr.; three brothers, E.C. Abbott of Arcadia, Calif. L., Philip Abbott of San Pedro, Calif., and Dexter Abbott of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and five grandchildren. Swift, Treadwell & Canale has charge.
