Hermann Peter Heinrich Behrens was born 10 October 1888 in Hanover, Germany. He immigrated to Panama, and then to the United States, arriving in San Francisco May 12, 1917. Four years later he moved to Tacoma, Washington. While living in Tacoma he married Mamie Beryl (Cyphert) Miller, a dressmaker.
