July 6, 1967, The Evening Times, Sayre, PA: Rome area woman killed; Car hits tree near Nichols: Mrs. Lila May Corbin Bowen, 35, widely known resident of eastern Bradford County, was instantly killed Wednesday afternoon at 3:55 o'clock in an automobile accident on the Sayre-Nichols road two-tenths of a mile east of the Pennsylvania state line. She was on her way to work at O'Briens Inn on Waverly Hill where she was employed as a waitress. Mrs. Bowen, wife of Richard Bowen of Rome, Pa. RD#1, was driving west and met an eastbound car as she went around a curve on the downgrade. Both she and the other driver, Raymond M. Berry of Smith Creek Road, RD#1, Nichols, swerved to avoid a head-on collision.
Mrs. Bowen's recently purchased 1967 Opal went off the right shoulder and she lost control. The car skidded across the highway, spinning counter-clockwise at 180 degres, and the right side of the vehicle crashed into a large tree. Mrs. Bowen was pinned in the wreckage.
Tioga County Sherriff's Department officers and the Owego Fire Dept. emergency squad answered a call for help and removed the woman from the car. The Owego firemen's ambulance took her to the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre where she was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Phillip Mahoney. Tioga County, NY Coroner Dr. Vernon E. McNeilus said death was due to a broken neck. The body was removed to the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, Nichols. Funeral arrangements had not been completed last night.
Mrs. Bowen was born Dec. 6, 1931 in Elmira. She was a member of the North Orwell Church and the American Quarter Horse Association. She and Mr. Bowen have been raising horses on their farm.
Mrs. Bowen was a graduate of LeRaysvile High School, Class of 1949. She was in the band, on the basketball team for four years, in the Glee Club and on the softball team for four years. She was president of her class for four years.
