He Could Escape.

John Van Bibber
, 45 years old, of Galena, Kan., was killed instantly by a rock slab, weighing several hundred pounds, falling upon him at 11 o’clock yesterday morning while he was trimming the roof in the Priscilla mine, three miles west of Joplin. A portion of his head, his right side and his chest were crushed, while his left leg was broken. Life was extinct when workmen extricated him from beneath the large boulder.

Van Bibber, who was a roof trimmer, was standing on a barrel engaged in prying loose the slab with a "pinch bar" and a wooden fulcrum, at the time standing beneath the slab. The side where he was prying, which already had been partly disengaged by blasting, suddenly gave way. Before Van Bibber could escape the entire slab had crushed him to the floor of the drift.

Leaves Family of Five.
Van Bibber
had been in the employ of the Underwriters Land Company for the last three years, being transferred to the Priscilla mine when it was placed in operation less than a year ago. He is survived by a wife and four children, all living in Galena, Kan.

An inquest to determine the cause of the accident and circumstances surrounding it, will be held at 10 o’clock this morning by Coroner A. R. Snyder in the Cunningham undertaking rooms, to which place the body was removed.

The funeral probably will be held in Galena this afternoon, with burial in Galena (sic) cemetery.

of John Van Bibber.

That John Van Bibber came to his death by accidentally stepping backwards and under a falling slab at Priscilla mine yesterday was the verdict of the jury in the coroner’s inquest held at the Cunningham Undertaking Company’s parlors this morning.

I'm try to verify a birth date for John F. VanBibber who married Nettie Mae Phillips in Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1900. I believe he is the son of James Henry VB and Ruth Ann Hooker. According to one family sheet I've received, his birth date is 24 August 1867; however, his marriage license says he was 28 in 1900, which would have him born in 1872. John was killed in a mining accident in 1913 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, Kansas next to his daughter Cora, who died in infancy. Any help that can be given by any of the VanBibber genealogists would be appreciated.
