Doris was born on July 27, 1919, at Davis Mill in Bedford County, Virginia. She was the oldest member of Stuarts Draft Baptist Church where she had been very active until several years ago when her health began to fail. She served as Women Missionary Union President, Sunday School Teacher (for all ages over the years) and a member of the Salt and Light Senior Adult Group. Known as "Granny" to all, she enjoyed making quilts, especially for all the new babies that arrived. The family would like for all those that have quilts bring them to the service and be recognized. She loved to take pictures, and keep albums of family and events. She has albums she made of Stuarts Draft (newspaper clippings and photos), the Stuarts Draft Volunteer Fire Company, Forbes and Almarode family pictures and many many more. When she was in a group you could hear someone say "Smile, Granny has her camera".
The family will receive friends at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes of Stuarts Draft, from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, November 25, 2013, and other times at the home of Randal and Mildred Almarode, 140 Sylvan Drive in Stuarts Draft. Funeral services will be conducted at Stuarts Draft Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2013, with Dr. William Kopp and the Reverend Judson Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons, Shawn Lavender, Clint and Curt Almarode, Travis Baber, Dine Patterson, Jacob and Dillon Hutchinson, and Nathan Blacka.
Members of the Salt and Light group at Stuarts Draft Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family wishes to especially thank the staff at the Cottage at Stuarts Draft Retirement Community for the kind and loving care they extended to Mother during her stay with them. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stuarts Draft Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1054, Stuarts Draft, VA 24477. .
