Rufus Edgar Burden, 88, of Elberton died Aug. 31, 2008, at Nancy Hart Nursing Center.

A native of Elbert County, he was a son of the late John Gipson Burden and Ramie Warren Burden. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, and the recipient of the Purple Heart and served as Captain in the Strategic Air Command. He was a member of the Yaarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta, Scottish Rite in Atlanta and Solomon's Lodge #1 A&FM in Savannah. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church for more than 25 years. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John W. Burden and Phil D. Burden, and three sisters, Callie Craft, Rosalie Richardson and Estelle Kight.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Juanita Burden of Elberton; a daughter, Carol Diane Cowart of Dawsonville; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews

Funeral services were held Sept. 3 at Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Lynn Kellum officiating. Entombment was at Elmhurst Cemetery.

Hicks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
