The boy's mother was Carrie Erdman, born in Elk County Kansas in 1873 of a German immigrant father (surnamed Erdmanis) and a mother of French background. In Elk County in 1887, at the age of fourteen, Carrie married Lafayette E. Benedict. They must have come to Lincoln County in the landrun, for they proved their homestead in 1896. It was located in Union Township five miles north of Chandler, making Wright Cemetery a convenient place for them to bury.
The Benedict family did not stay long in Lincoln County, no more than four years. The 1900 census shows them living in Wasco County Oregon.
