Jeanette was born in Scotland in Glenrothes, Abdie Parish, Fifeshire April 4, 1819 and was christened there about a month later. Her parents were William and Margaret Mitchell, also born in Scotland. She married William Finlayson who hailed from Perthshire, Scotland sometime in the early 1840's. He was a hand loom weaver. They had four children in Fifeshire, Scotland, before setting sail to America in 1856. Their Scottish-born children were: Thomas; Maggie; Isabella; and Jessie. They settled in Bristol (Yorkville), IL where William's father Thomas had already immigrated a year or so earlier. William became a farmer, and to them two more children were born: Minnie (1859) and Elizabeth or Lizzie (1863). The family lived and farmed in the area for many decades. Her legacy was her pioneering spirit, as a sojourner to a new country, and as a hard-working farmer's wife and mother of 6 children.
