Born in 1845, in Lamar Alabama, Joel Didimus "Joe" was 11th of the 12 children born to William Berry and Mary Jane "Polly" Huddleston. His father was a farmer and from his youth, that was what Joe wanted to do. He married Sarah Daniel in 1868 and they were a farm family all their lives.

Sarah gave birth to eight children, but one was stillborn and one lived just three years. So their household was six children; three girls and three boys. Joe was quiet and reserved; a hard-working, no-nonsense kind of man, while Sarah was a tower of strength in the home.

They had moved to Montague County in Texas in about 1901, farmed there until about 1914 when they abruptly moved back to their former homeland in Alabama. Life offered a lot of ups and downs, but they were firmly fixed in faith and determination. Sarah lived to age 80 and Joe to age 88. The families that began with them are many, and they are remembered with respect.
