John Kearns (no middle name) was born to his parents: Thomas and Sophia Ann Catherine (nee Zwalling) Kearns. on 22nd day of May 1782 in Mifflin County Pennsylvania. Both of his parents also was born and raised in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, there they married and raised nine children. Thomas and Sophia Ann purchased a large tract of land - cleared a portion of it, cultivated it and there lived with his family until his death. He was one of the progressive men of the day and was largely instrumental in introducing modern (for that time) methods of local government.
They were both members of the Presbyterian church, rearing their children with great strictness. John at the age of 26 married Elizabeth Stroup in 1808. They had 9 children - 4 daughters and 5 sons, their names are:

1. Margaret Kearns, born 1809 and died in 1891
2. Sophia Kearns, born 1810 and died in 1884
3. Thomas Gardner Kearns, born 1813 and died 1851
4. Phillip Stroup Kearns, born 1814 and died 1886
5. Sarah Elizabeth Kearns, born 1816 and died 1895
6. John William Kearns, born 1824 and died 1873
7. Joseph Kearns, born 1827 and died 1870
8. Mary Catherine Kearns, born 1830 and died 1833
9. Elias Calvin Kearns, born 1839 and died 1888

Thomas Kearns was born in the United States not in Germany as many think, but his father Abraham Kearns was born in Germany. Abraham's mother Elizabeth joined him on the Ship that came to America but his father Hans did not want to travel so he stayed behind. Abraham and his wife Maria along with three small children and Maria was pregnant with their forth child, left Germany. They boarded the Ship called Britannia with the Ships Capitan Michael Franklin, when the ship left the dock on the 23rd of September 1731 to came to the United States. Abraham, Maria (his wife), his mother Elizabeth and three children were born in Germany. The children's names are: Gertrude (1724), Johannes (1728), Adam (1730) and William was born on the 27th of September 1731, while on the ship that was near Wurttemberg, Netherlands. The Ship reached the the United States seven days later, they docked at Elis Island, and went through the immigration process and was approved to be in the United States of this America, and traveled to Pennsylvania for a new beginning. There they found land in Mifflin County Pennsylvania. Abrahams mother Elizabeth died shortly after reaching Pennsylvania. Her death was unexpected. Early the next year Abraham got news that his father Hans had passed away. Their first United States child that was born in 1733 was Michael Kearns, and 10 more children following Michael. Abraham and Maria had a total of 14 children. Thomas Kearns was the 9th child (in birth order), was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. Thomas Kearns never left the United States, and all his children were born in Pennsylvania. They all lived and died in Pennsylvania and was buried at the Little Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Footnote:
I have spent many hours researching my Kearns family history and collecting documentation for over 20 years. As other stories about Thomas Kearns, his children John Kearns, being born in Germany are not true. Look at the year the ship left Germany on 23rd of September 1731 and look at the ages of all the children of Abraham and then all of the children born to Thomas and the children born to John Kearns will show that none of them were born in Germany.
