James Stanners was the son of Malcolm and Christina/Christian (Stanners) Stanners. He was born 09 July 1840 in Carriden parish, Linlithgowshire (now West Lothian), Scotland. He was baptized on 12 July 1840 in the same parish.

James married Anna Snadden in 1859 also in Carriden parish.

The surname Stanners was changed to Stanhouse once they came to the US.
