Rufus I. Strong was the son of Nathaniel Strong and Mary Caroline Norton Strong. Nathaniel and Mary had a large family. They had 13 or 14 children. The family moved from Heard, County Georgia to Claiborne,Parish Louisiana in the late 1850's. Most of the children were born in Georgia but the last 2 or 3 were born in Louisiana. Nathaniel was listed as a Blacksmith in the 1860 Census of Claiborne Parish. Rufus had a brother William N. Strong that was in the Civil War along with 3 brother in laws that all fought for the CSA. His father Nathaniel was listed as a Private in the Louisiana 4th Cavalry. Most of the Strongs stayed in the area of north west Louisiana. However Rufus, his brother William, brother Nathan and sister Susan Strong Mitchell all moved with their families to Texas in the 1880's. I have been told that Rufus moved on from Texas to Colorado while working for the Railroad.
