Wilder W. Crane was an esteemed professor, founder of the Political Science Department at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. He wrote 10 works in 17 publications housed in 673 library holdings. Among the most widely read were:

State Legislatives Systems, published in 1968; Wisconsin Government and Politics, five editions published between 1976 and 1987; The Legislature of Lower Austria, published in 1961; Wisconsin Government and Politics, published in 1991; Crane and Hagaensick's Wisconsin Government and Politics, two editions published between 1996 and 2008; The Legislative Struggle in Wisconsin Decision-Making in the 1957 Wisconsin Assembly, three editions published between 1959 and 1972; Socialist Policy in a Multinational State: Nationality Policy as an Explanation of the Socialist Support of the Habsburg Monarchy in 1914, two editions published in 1952.

The university created a position in the department, The Wilder Crane Professor of Government, in his honor. Wilder W. Crane Memorial Political Scholarships are also bestowed in his honor.

Wilder also served in the Wisconsin state senate as a Republican from the 2nd District from 1957-8.
