Ellena Josephine Russel was the first of four children born to Albert Thomas Russell and Josephine Louisa "Jose" (Coleman) Lowe. She was born in Kentucky on 24 Sep 1868 just three years after the conclusion of the Civil War. She was twenty years old when she married William Ervin Lowe on 19 Dec 1888 in Mayfield, Graves Co., Kentucky. She and her husband were 2nd cousins. During the 1890s "Janie" or "Leny" and her husband began their westward migration—her first child. Enous, was born in Paducah, KY, in 1887, with her second child, Myrtle Alice "Mirty" being born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, in 1889. The next three children were also born in Arkansas, and by the time she had her sixth child in 1900, Eunice Floyd Lowe, she and her husband and their young family had migrated into Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, in October 1898 and had settled on land north of Ada. Together they had a large family of eleven children, including a set of twins, but tragically one of the twins died as an infant at three months.

When her youngest child was sixteen, Janie died on Thursday, 4 August 1927, in her family home northeast of Ada. She was 58 years old. Funeral services were held on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock; interment was in Rosedale Cemetery. [Announcement, The Ada Weekly News, Thursday, 11 Aug 1927, p3 c7]
