Obituary
Oren Levi Burnett, 75 a resident of Fort Sumner, NM since May 1995 died Wednesday, February 28, 1996 at De Baca General Hospital in Fort Sumner following an illness. Mr. Burnett was born September 27, 1920 in Clovis, NM to the home of Wickliffe Lafayette Burnett and the former Bertha Mae Gephart. He was reared and attended schools at Lindrith, NM. He made his home in Springer, NM where he worked as a truck driver. Oren enlisted in
the U.S. Navy on September 7, 1943, where he served on the USS San Juan and the USS Commencement Bay. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Area
Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal (7 Stars). Oren was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945.
He was united in marriage to Edna Maxine Beck on February 10, 1946, they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Oren and Edna made their home in Sweet Home and Roseburg, Oregon and Sequim and Omak, Washington for many years where he was employed in the lumber industry for over 30 years. Together they also operated a Motel and a private resort at Sequim Bay Point, WA.
Oren enjoyed and was an accomplished musician. He has written several songs for his family. Oren was a charter member of Mount Nebo Lodge #214, and a 32nd Degree member of Scottish Rite, and Eastern Star Chapter #8 in Roseburg, Oregon. He was a member of the D.A.V. for over 25 years. Oren and Edna were longtime members of Faith Lutheran Church in Roseburg, and attend the First United Methodist Church in Fort Sumner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Chester Garland Burnett and Wilmer Burnett, three sisters Margie Newton and two infant sisters.
Survivors include his wife Edna M. of the home in Fort Sumner, NM; two sons Edward Leroy of Kentucky, Garland Burnett and wife Connie of Cedar Crest, NM; four sisters Ida Belle Kinzie of Corona, CA; Florence Kinzie of Clovis, NM; Berthal Mae Womble of Tucumcari; Dorothy Lee Harney of Billings, Montana and one brother Sam E. Burnett of Washtucua,
Washington. Other survivors include one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, March 3, 1996 from the First United Methodist Church in Fort Sumner with Rev. Martin Reeves officiating. Graveside Masonic services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday, March 4, 1996 from the Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 5 PM at the Chavez Funeral Home, 804 N. Fifth Street, Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society in memory of Oren L. Burnett.
