James was born in Harrisburg County, Kentucky. He married Willie Ellen Hooper in Harrisburg County on Jan. 7, 1907.
He retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Surviving are sons, Thomas, Mount Zion; Lee, Atwood; Ralph, Augusta, Ga.; Harold, Banger, Maine; daughters, Mrs Thelma McCoy, Mrs. Dewey (Rhoda) Matthews and Mrs Stanley (Nell) Taylor, all of Decatur; Mrs. Mervin (Addie) Bahney and Mrs. Roy (Myrtle) Ellis, both of Mattoon; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mount Zion cemetery; Friends could call at the Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home in Mount Zion tonight from 4 to 6. Burial in Mount Zion Cemetery.
