Lewis was the son of Frank M. and Jennie Jones Hale. His parents are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger in Runnels Co, TX. According to his death certificate, he was born in Valais, TX. He was a veteran in World War I. Before retiring, he was Building Engineer for Hamilton Building in Wichita Falls.He married Margrett Lena Hale. He was residing in Wichita Falls at the time of his death in a local nursing home.
