Information received from Jim Hudson, Dec. 4, 2009 (Joseph was his grandfather)
According to family tradition, my grandfather, Joseph Taylor Hudson, Sr., came to Spartanburg to attend business school where I believe he met my grandmother, Belle Harrison Haynsworth of Florence, SC. Supposedly he found the pronunciation of Hu"t"son to be somewhat "backwoods" sounding. Hu"d"son sounded more "professional" and "distinguished". He became a rather prominient businessman in Spartanburg involved with old Major Joseph Marsh Elford in the Elford Insurance Agency. Eventually after Major Elford died I believe he became the Spartanburg City Clerk and at one point resigned from that post to run for mayor. He lost the election. He died in 1925 at age 50 as a result of peritonitis after being involved in a fishing accident.
