Josiah Barnett was born 1827 in Fairfield County Ohio to Isaac and Elizabeth Sterling Barnett. In 1852 he married Mary Ray 1827-1878 in Ohio and they had these children: Edgar M. 1852-1934, Frances Elizabeth 1854-1925,James 1858-1900, & Ida 1860--. In 1882 he married Esther Tennessee Raines in Alabama & they moved to Gassville, Baxter County Arkansas. They had these children: Ada Sterling 1886-1964, Estella May 1887-1977, Rachael 1889--, Della 1890-1951, Helen 1898-1989, & Myrtle Regina 1900-1987. During his lifetime Josiah worked as a farmer, soldier, produce dealer, hotel keeper, saddler, & school teacher. He played the fiddle & liked astronomy. He served as a Corporal and Sergeant during the Civil War in Company G, 135th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He received a disability pension after the war. He died in Gassville, Arkansas in 1906 of "dropsy."
