Candace was born 10 Aug 1823 in Orwell, PA the oldest child of William and Lydia (Russell) Alger. She was a church member in Orwell and later Rome. She married Asher Holmes, son of Joseph and Nancy (Shaver) Holmes. They started their family in Bradford Co., PA when their son Benjamim Franklin Holmes was born in 1848. Their other children, all born in PA, are Edgar b.1853 who died an infant, Richard b.1856 , and William b. 1860. By 1870, Candace and Asher had moved to Gentry Co., Missouri. They had returned to Bradford Co. with son William when she passed on 23 Mar 1900.
