Mr. Emil Eugene "Gene" Ballance, 81, of Anna died at 4:15 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2008, at his home.

He was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Wolf Lake, the son of Louie and Gustia (Lowe) Ballance.

He married Katherine Elder, who passed away March 27, 1988. He then married Dorotha M. Williams who survives.

Gene is survived by his wife, Dorotha M. Ballance of Anna; four children and their spouses, Sam and Priscilla Ballance of Emden, Dan and Ginger Ballance of Cobden, Mike and Liz Ballance of Willard, Mo., and Kay and Kirt Jackson of Robards, Ky.; three stepchildren and their spouses, Janet and Ron Jennings of Anna, Jim and Kathy McBride of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jane Jones of Makanda; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and Jack Schwartz of Makanda and Mickey and Bill Tweedy and Kitty and Larry Yates, all of Cobden; one sister-in-law, Mary Ballance of Wolf Lake; nine grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-step grandchild; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Katherine, two brothers, Dorris and Donald Ballance, and two infant sisters, Wilma and Patty.

Gene was retired from the U.S. Coast Guard having served 21 years and serving six years with the U.S. Navy during World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam. He was a member of the Galilee Baptist Church, and a lifetime member of Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 of the VFW in Anna and Union County Country Club.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008, in Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Randy Carstens officiating. Interment will be in Cobden Cemetery, with full military honors at the grave by Carroll P. Foster Post 3455. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 18, 2008, at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.

Memorials may be made to the Evangelical Presbyterian Church or Galilee Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
