Lemoyne Leland “Speedy” Bergman, 89 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Lemoyne was born February 1, 1925 on the family homestead, north of Loomis, in Phelps County, Nebraska, the eldest of four children born to Joel and Hildur (Magnuson) Bergman. He received his primary education at Hillside School District #49 through the eighth grade and then graduated from Loomis High School with the class of 1942. During his high school years, Lemoyne’s basketball coach referred to him as “Speedy”, and this nickname became recognizable the remainder of his life.

On June 10, 1952, Lemoyne was united in marriage to Joyce Ann Jensen. They were blessed with three children: Cheryl Ann, Richard Lee, and Charles Andrew.

He was a member of the Holcomb Evangelical Free Church, where he served in many capacities throughout the years. He was a man that had a quiet, yet deep faith in his Lord. He also enjoyed serving on the boards of the R-4 School and the Christian Homes. Speedy had strong roots in the soil, and loved being a farmer. He started farming with his dad and brother on the family homestead north of Loomis. In 1955, he and Joyce moved to a farm ten miles north of Holdrege. For several years he sold Keltgen Seed. Speedy loved the social aspect of farm life. He especially enjoyed telling stories over a cup of coffee at a kitchen table.

When Lemoyne turned the farm over to his sons, he and Joyce began spending their summers at their cabin on Johnson Lake. The cabin became a home away from home for them and their family. Grandpa Speedy loved having all his kids around laughing and playing. He found a way to tease and give everyone a hard time, without offending anyone. He also enjoyed working as cook’s assistant and dishwasher in Joyce’s R-4 kitchen. In 1993, Speedy and Joyce moved to Holdrege. After moving to town, he pursued a hobby of furniture restoration and continued taking an active, daily interest in the farm. He especially loved to ride in the combine with his son, Chuck. On August 23, 2012 he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce of 60 years.

Besides his wife and parents, Speedy was preceded in death by his brother, Grant Bergman; and sister, Betty Isaacson and her husband, Delford.

He leaves to mourn his passing; his three children: Cheri Bergman, Rick Bergman and his wife, Julie, and Chuck Bergman all of Holdrege; four grandchildren: Kara Rupnow and her husband, Ted of Normal, Illinois, Krista Banks and her husband, Jason of Littleton, Colorado, Ericka Shaffer and her husband, Kyle of Aurora, Nebraska and Andrew Bergman of rural Holdrege and his fiancée, Elizabeth Eberle of David City, Nebraska; one sister, Marilyn Olenik and her husband, Ken of Rockford, Illinois; sister-in-law: Donna Bergman of Holdrege and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in Speedy’s honor and kindly suggested to the Holcomb Church, the Chapel at the Lake, or Christian Homes Care Community.
