William Victor “Vic” Skelly, age 96, of Janesville, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Manor, Footville.
He was born on the family farm in Rock Township on May 22, 1913, the son of Peter and Cora (Holmes) Skelly.
Vic attended Hayner Country School and graduated from Janesville High School in 1931. He married Elsie M. Shane on May 16, 1936, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Janesville. She preceded him in death on Feb. 13, 1997.
Vic joined the Janesville Fire Department in 1941, and fought many fires including the Milwaukee Street Bridge Fire of 1941. He told many interesting tales about his 30 years on the fire department. He retired as Captain in 1968. He lived to be the oldest retired Wisconsin Fireman. After retirement, he joined the staff at First National Bank and continued to work for an additional 10 years. Vic and Elsie were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
They had 3 children. They loved holiday and family gatherings with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They enjoyed many winters in Florida with other retired firemen and traveling to see their family. Vic spent the last 10 years with many good friends at Willard Haus in Janesville before moving to St. Elizabeth Manor.
He is survived by his 3 children; 7 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant son, Richard; and 4 brothers: Chester, Robert, Donald and James Skelly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH with Rev. Stephen J. Umhoefer officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. Visitation will take place on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Manor, Footville.
