William Baker Gunn was born in Essex England. He immigrated to America before 1860 with his parents and four sisters. They traveled to Utah and settled in Hoytsville, Summit County.

At the age of 26 William settled in Randolph, Utah, claimed a lot, and was granted lawful ownership of the property in 1871.He was awarded his U. S. citizenship certificate on November 8, 1880.

On January 27, 1872 William married Sarah Ellen Mills. They were parents of twelve children, five of whom died before maturity. Of the survivors, Laura married Edwin T. Pope; Lois married John Kennedy, Jr.; Frances Emma married Joseph Fessler; Benjamin Alfred married Elinor ("Teen") Rees; Mary first married Orin Lee, and later, Harry Spangler; Edward married Pearl Green; and George married Mandy Manesss.

William Baker Gunn worked to provide a living for his family and to build up the Randolph settlement of his day. He also worked on construction of the Mormon Temple in Logan, Utah. His wife was an expert seamstress; quilts and handwork were her specialties.
