Wife of Jonathan D Gillespe

22 Jan 1892 Middletown NY Daily Times

A telegram was received by M D Stivers yesterday announcing the death of his aged aunt, Mrs Leah Gillespie, which occurred that morning at the residence of her daughter with whom she had made her home in New Milford, Pa. The cause of her death was old age and general debility. Although she passed her 92d year the 13th of December last year, she retained her mental and physical powers in a remarkable degree.

Deceased was born near Scotchtown, in this county, and was the daughter of Jonathan Dunning and Rachael Crans, who afterwards moved to Sussex county, NJ, where they died many years ago. She married her cousin, Dunning Gillespie. They resided for a time at Little Britain, this county, and from there, some 55 years ago, removed to Sussex county, NJ, and from thence over 50 years since to Susquehanna county, Pa, where her husband died, and where she has since lived.

She leaves surviving her the following children, most of whom are well advanced in years, viz.: Mrs Ann Phillips, of Branchville, NJ; and Robert, Andrew, Isaac, John, Jane and Carrie, who live in or near New Milford, except John, who resides near Albany. There are also several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, (of whom Miss Ella McDanalds, who was recently a teacher in our public schools, was one), and two great great=grandchildren--son and daughter of Mr George McDanalds, of Sussex county.

She also leaves two younger sisters--Mrs Rachel Low, of Montgomery, and Mrs Harriet Williams, of Sussex county, NJ, both quite aged ladies. Hon Absalom Dunning and Judge Moses Dunning, who were during their lifetime prominent residents of Sussex county, were brothers. The late Mrs. Margaret Stivers, of Ridgebury, in this county, was a sister.

The deceased was a woman of great industry. She was an excellent mother and a kind friend and was always doing something to make others happy.

She was all her life a zealous and devoted Christian--a woman of sterling worth who was respected and esteemed by old and young alike.
