Emily was born as the oldest child to parents William Edward (1865-1948) and Hannah Holden Tracy (1869-1889). On February 27, 1889 her parents gave birth to her only sibling, William Edmond Tracy. Her mother died on March 4, 1889, just 5 days after giving birth to William. Sadness struck this small family again when William died at the age of two months on April 27, 1889. Emily's father never remarried and raised Emily alone.

Emily married John Chadwick Tooth (1883-1969) on December 25, 1906 in Almo, Idaho.

Parents to five children: Zelda Lona (1907-1915), Emily Othello (1908-1909), John Edward (1909-1915), Glenna (1911-1915) and James Ferris (1913-1915).

John and Emily's second child (Emily) died at the age of eight months. On August 20, 1915 John and Emily went to a Friday night dance leaving their children with a baby-sitter. While at the dance, they were informed and raced home to find their home had burned and the fire had killed the baby sitter and their four remaining children. They never had any more children.

Four months after the fire, John and Emily were sealed in the Manti LDS Temple on the eve of their 9th wedding anniversary, December 24, 1915. That day, they had their five deceased children sealed to them.
